Jewelry From the Past
MODAPEDIA ARTICLES
During my visit to the ancient Indian monuments I had the rare opportunity to relive the life and granduer of the late Indian Muslim rulers who have contributed immensely to the every being of the nation. The old jewelry was one thing that I notice to be still in fashion in the Indian sub continent among the rich and the poor all showing off in their own way.One of the few female rulers of India, princess Razia Sultana (1236-1240) has been photographed with the bounty of old antique jewelry of her era.Today's designers also hold a great regard to the mughal artefacts that display the old vintage jewelry made of gold and studded with the sparkle of diamonds rubies and gems of all kinds.
Though her rule was sadly a very short one, princess Razia sultana is the very first queen of the muslim world and regarded well in the eyes of the historians. She was more intelligent than her brothers and her rule was etched in the books of history. The old turquoise jewelry can be traced in almost all the sultans and Nawabs of yester India. The Peacock throne of the mughals, the old celtic jewelry on the kings and queens alike, the tombs and mahals studded with old rhinestone jewelry the beautiful mumtaz mahal, noojahan all are symbolic of the mughal style of art.
We can also witness the beautiful designs in the south. Tipu sultan and his famous sword the hyderabad nizam's collection tha is open to all, show a great collection that cannot be missed out by any one who loves old fashioned jewelry from the east!
Large amount of jewels are now lost in the wars that raged between the rulers themselves. The conflict between the sikhs and mughal tyranical forces were long drawn involving a number of human sacrfices. Punjab bore the burnt of several invasions for ages. Much the art and old jewelry etched with great care was lost in these battles. The south had a different system of culture and art altogether. The disparity is evident on the face of the two diagnol halves which still shows unity in diversity.
Despite the attacks, their were many brave rulers like Tipu Sultan who roared 'why should I cling to life needlessly, would you order a tiger to lead a life of a jackal?' He was a just king who never allowed looting after war. He said enriches a few impoverished the nations and dishonored the entire army. His sword which is popularly known as Tipu's Sword is the pride of India. The bedchamber sword that was given to the celebrated Scottish general who beat the Tiger Tipu was auctioned and it fetched 175000 pounds. The crowns the old pawn Indian jewelry the medallions and the thrones of the past rulers surprises one and all in their intrinsic beauty and speaks of the riches of ancient India.
